For those who don’t know, Oranje is an annual event in Indy that combines visual art, music and interaction with the party atmosphere of a club.  After 11 years, FAB has painted something: a school bus, a delivery minivan, canvases or just a constructed wall, Oranje has always provided new and interesting opportunities for us. This year they really outdid themselves.

We got connected with their sponsor, PBR, and talked about the possibility of painting a box truck. That seemed like a high enough goal and it would have been a blast. We were shocked when we got to the spot and saw that PBR had left us a brand new, 36 foot, 18 bay trailer.

Needless to say we had to revisit our concepts to accommodate the size. What a great time we had working on it throughout the week and especially on the night of the party. The crowd is always great and the Oranje team is top-notch. Thanks again, friends. Here’s to 2013…

The jam is now well behind us and most of the loose ends have been tied up so we wanted to make sure and share our process for the 2012 wall. We received a lot of compliments on the work and made an even better impression on the community than we expected. We all agree it’s our best crew piece to date and we wanted to show some of the planning that helped us to ultimately create a winning strategy to get it done.

The concept was chosen purely because our first SubSurface production used the ‘Moles Undergraound’ theme but didn’t really hit the mark. With that, we narrowed down the spots and chose which would be ours. For the first time ever, we planned out our production to scale.

DF Crew came to town in force over Labor Day Weekend. Among them were some we have known for a while and a couple of our RTD crewmates. Thanks to Kwaze, Rapes, Emit, Ewok, Jick, Vogey and especially to Dero; an NYC subway legend (and one hell of a nice guy) whose style is iconic. These cats were all cool as a fan and their work speaks for itself. They’re hilarious too. Enjoy the vacation footage.

If you’re looking for something to do, we got it for you.

We’re showing 19 spray paint on canvas pieces, select photos of previous walls and an installation we painted last weekend for the gallery.

Please come by and say hello, you might meet other SubSurface artists. We think this is a unique collection of work and we’re proud to work with Mark Ruschman on what is certain to be our best show yet.

Last week we got busy on a mural project in Indy’s Haughville neighborhood. We hooked up with Near West to create a welcome message to greet people as they enter the neighborhood from Downtown. With strong family and community ties to the west side, we take special pride in this piece. It’s just around the corner from the mural we did with the Humane Society.

Enlisting the help of our good friend and crewmate, Gems, we spent a couple of days working sunup to sundown to get all but the last details knocked out. After another couple of evenings to clean it up and get photos, we agreed that we had finished what we believe to be among our best murals to date. It has the right message, in the right place, with the right flavor. We learned a lot and had a chance to help some people out in the process. There isn’t much more we could want…
